Motor and gearbox
A motor that hums without turning is usually a capacitor, not a motor. A gearbox that turns without lifting has stripped. One is an afternoon, the other is a part order, and they sound almost identical from the dock.
Docks rot slowly. Lifts quit all at once, usually with the boat on them. Motors, gearboxes, cables, limit switches, and lifts that have settled until the hull sits in the water.

Cables fail from the inside out, so the strand you can see is the last part to look wrong. Frayed cable, seized sheaves, and uneven winding all show up first as a cradle that lifts crooked.
Limit switches drift, contactors weld shut, and lake damp gets into every connection eventually. Cheapest category to fix and the one most often misdiagnosed as a dead motor.
None of this needs tools. It sorts the problem into a category, which is the difference between one trip and two.

Lift work travels better than dock work. The same motors and cable systems are on every shoreline, so coverage runs the length of the lake rather than one town's waterfront.
The most misdiagnosed component on the lake. Most replaced motors did not need replacing.
Fails from the inside out. Visible fraying is a late symptom, not a warning.
When the motor turns and nothing rises, the drive train is where to look.
The least expensive thing that can be wrong, and the most often misdiagnosed.
A lift that comes up out of level is a load problem, not a cosmetic one.
